Level, isolated, drained
Outdoor living slabs fail three ways: they crack at the join with the dwelling’s slab, they pond, or they tip water at the wall. The specification closes all three doors. Isolation joints keep new concrete structurally separate from the dwelling and anything else that moves to its own schedule. Falls are set off real levels, away from the building, every time. And the base under it is compacted rock over stripped ground, because entertaining areas host pianos, spas and eventually a trailer reversing somewhere it should not.
Finish to match the block
Most alfresco slabs take one of three surfaces: broom finished grey for grip and budget, a smoother honed-style finish for undercover barefoot comfort, or exposed aggregate to carry the frontage’s stone through to the back of the block. Colour can run through the mix to sit with your roofline and render. Samples come out at the measure and the decision is made in your own light, not a showroom’s.

Which finish is right for an outdoor living slab?
Under a roofline, a smoother finish is comfortable and easy to sweep. Out in the weather, broom finish or exposed aggregate earns its keep with grip when the slab is wet. Around fire pits on the bigger blocks, plain broom grey takes embers and heat without complaint. We talk it through with samples at the measure, matched to how you will actually use the space.
Will water sit on it or run at the house?
Neither, and that answer is designed rather than hoped for. Falls are set from levels taken at the measure so the slab sheds water away from the building to lawn, garden or a formed drain, and where a covered alfresco tucks against the house we form the drainage into the pour. A slab that drains at the wall is a defect, whatever its finish looks like.
