The suburb grew from a genuinely pretty village into one of the south east’s most established addresses, and its concrete is old enough to show it: the streets around High Street and the older courts carry original drives and paths from decades back, while the newer Berwick estates bring the familiar handover gaps.

City of Casey and the road reserve in Berwick

Berwick sits in the City of Casey rather than Cardinia Shire, and Casey runs its own crossover process with its own paperwork rhythm. A vehicle crossing permit is required before a crossover is built, widened or maintained, and working on one without a permit is an offence that can draw a fine. The application carries a $364 non-refundable fee, a council officer assesses the site within 28 business days against Casey’s vehicle crossing guidelines, and once approved and paid the permit with its drawings arrives by email and stays valid for 12 months.

The build sequence is where Casey is most particular. The crossing gets excavated and boxed up to the permit drawings, then stops: no concrete is poured until a council pre-pour inspection passes, booked with at least three business days notice. Fail it twice and the permit is cancelled, which is a paperwork disaster we simply do not have, because the formwork is set to the drawings the first time. Casey also publishes firm position rules: residential crossings from 3 metres wide up to 5.5 with approval, at least 6 metres from an intersection, 2 metres from a pram crossing, a metre clear of pits, poles, hydrants and streetlights, 0.75 metres from drainage pits, and clear of street tree protection zones, with service authority approval needed where clearances cannot be met.

None of this should worry a Berwick homeowner, because all of it is our job: the application, the drawings, the boxing, the inspection booking and the pour, sequenced so council’s timeline and yours meet in the middle. Fees are council’s own and get confirmed with the quote.
