Extending a driveway on an estate block
The builder poured a drive for one polite car. The household owns two, a trailer and a caravan with opinions. Closing that gap is one of the corridor's most-booked jobs, and here is how it actually works.
The three classic extensions
The second-car strip widens the existing drive by 1 to 1.5 metres so two cars sit side by side without lawn casualties, the signature job of the estates a decade or so along, Lakeside and Cardinia Lakes especially, where households outgrew their concrete. The caravan or boat pad runs a parking slab down the side of the house, hardstand the van can live on instead of the street. The shed run continues the drive through the gate to a garage or workshop slab down the back. All three price off the standard driveway card, $95 to $185 per square metre by finish.
The join is the craft
An extension lives or dies at the line where new meets old. Structurally that line gets an isolation joint, so the young slab and the old one move to their own seasonal rhythms without cracking each other. Visually, we run the join where a control joint would naturally sit and manage the colour conversation honestly, because fresh concrete beside weathered concrete will read as fresh for a while no matter who pours it. Matching close, or contrasting on purpose with exposed aggregate, both work; pretending the join will vanish does not.

Ground, base and the fill question
Estate lots through Pakenham, Officer and the southern releases are usually engineered fill over natural clay, so the extension gets excavated to firm material and built back up on compacted rock exactly as a full drive would be, with mesh on chairs and the thickness matched to what parks on it. A caravan pad carrying a tandem-axle van is not a footpath, and it gets specified accordingly. It is all in the public specification.
Permits, only sometimes
Work inside your boundary needs no council involvement, which covers most widenings and every shed run. The project touches paperwork only when it reaches the street: widening the crossover itself brings Cardinia Shire's road reserve permit and its six week lead time, or Casey's equivalent over the Berwick line. We flag which case is yours at the measure, and if the street is involved, the application goes in the week you accept the quote.
The money, worked
The second-car strip at 15 m² runs about $1,400 to $2,800 by finish. The 27 m² caravan pad lands between roughly $2,600 and $5,000. The shed run prices by length at the same rates, and pairing any of them with paths or an alfresco slab on one pour day buys every job the big-pour rate. What does widening a driveway cost?
A typical second-car strip, about 1.2 metres wide down a 12 metre drive, is roughly 15 m² and prices off the standard driveway card: around $1,400 in broom grey up to about $2,800 in exposed aggregate. A 3 x 9 metre caravan pad at 27 m² lands between roughly $2,600 and $5,000 by finish. Working rates until we measure the job; after that the written quote is the price, full stop.
Will the new concrete match the old?
Honestly: new concrete never perfectly matches weathered concrete, and anyone promising an invisible join is selling you the weather. What we can do is manage it, matching the finish and mix as closely as the original allows, running the join where a control joint would naturally sit so it reads as a line rather than a patch, or contrasting deliberately with exposed aggregate so the extension looks designed instead of appended. All three options come out at the measure with samples.
Does the council care about my widening?
Only where the work touches the road reserve. Widening inside your boundary, alongside the existing drive or back to a shed, needs no shire involvement. The moment the widening reaches the street, changing the crossover, Cardinia Shire’s Works Within a Road Reserve permit applies with its 28 business day lead time, and in Berwick the City of Casey’s vehicle crossing permit does the same job. Is it cheaper to widen now or wait until the drive needs replacing?
If the existing slab is sound, widen now and enjoy it; the join is managed the same way whenever you do it. If the original is already cracking, put the widening money towards replacement and pour the whole footprint once, wider, with proper base and steel. That maths almost always favours one bigger pour, and we will show you both figures at the measure so the decision is yours with the numbers in front of you.
